The Veneto: Asolo

Asolo is called the "town of 100 horizons" because of its position and the views you get from here. Asolo is a beautifully preserved walled medieval hill town with frescoed palazzi…..lovely streets, arcades, balconies, piazzas, cafes, flowers….it’s a romantic town. At the top of town is the castle/Rocca. Today the castle is the Eleanora Duse Theatre (an actress who so loved the town she asked to be buried here). Asolo (beautiful Asolo) is on the wine road and is the perfect place to stay or stop…..Cafes, flowers, lovely streets, wine, beauty — relaxation (Robert Browning got much inspiration from this town). The Loggia del Capitano (15th century) has fine frescoes on the façade (Contarini). Inside is the Museo Civico. There are some good frescoes in the following churches: Chiesa di San Gottardo (13th century), Chiesa di Santa Caterina (14th century) and the Chiesa di Santa Anna (Duse is buried in the cemetery here). The medieval duomo is located on what was once Roman Baths. There are some fine paintings inside. Check out the Longobardo House, the home of Eleanora Duse, the Beltramini Palazzo and the Fietta Palazzo (some fine architecture, art and gardens). Market day is Saturday in Asolo.
