An ancient and well-located 4 star hotel located right near the Basilica San Francesco. At one time this hotel was a monastery. As a hotel it’s been in service since 1868. The public rooms are grand and decorated with antiques, carpets, chandeliers and other lovely artistic touches. The hotel has played host to many important guests (stars, dignitaries…) for whatever that’s worth. There are 62 rooms with bath, TV, phone, minibar and some have balconies. There are suites and junior suites available too. The décor is genuinely pretty — the furniture hand painted (rather Venetian in style). There is a restaurant here that serves local traditional fare as well as international specialties. Some specialties are penne norcina, tagliatelle al tartufo, tagliata ai porcini and agnello scottodito. There are terraces (beautiful), lounges and meeting rooms here too. You get much hospitality here and the manager is quite nice and helpful.

Another delightful and well located hotel just off the Piazza del Commune (town hall). Built in the 16th century (although parts of the hotel date back as far as the 13th century) as a private residence, this 3 star hotel is run by the Laudenzi family (and has been for 100 years). There are 25 rooms here that have shower, bath, TV, phone, mini bar and great views (some with a small balcony). It’s down a short alley just off the main square and is made up of several houses (half the fun is getting here). The restaurant serves Umbrian cuisine and the chef is very inventive and interpretive. At the front of one of the houses is a lovely garden where guests can relax (really very neat).

Just off the Piazza del Commune, in the heart of Assisi is a 14th century palace (2 star hotel) built on Roman foundations. This place is better known for it’s restaurant, but the 7 rooms here are quite nice (and the location is terrific). Each room has a bath and phone and are decorated in traditional Umbrian style (wrought iron beds, parquet floors and heavy country wooden pieces). Those on the second floor have the best views and one room has a terrace (room #44). As I mentioned the restaurant is very well known and serves regional cuisine like prosciutto di agnello affumicato, strangozzi al tartufo, faraona in crosta and anatra al finocchio selvatico…..yum! It’s all great! The chef is Guglielmo Chiocchetti and he, his wife and two sons look after everything here — as a matter of fact, the entire family specializes in different aspects of the hotel, the city, art, geology — they help with just everything.

This is a medieval castle/villa right near Assisi. It was built in 1232, is a national monument and the atmosphere is totally medieval in style and décor. From the great stone walls to the cellars and ruins…this is a neat place to stay. Each of the 17 rooms has a bath, TV, phone and view. There’s a lovely terrace, a garden and a park (great for long walks). The castle is run by the Generotti family and they take great pride in this wonderful place. The cellars of the castle are now the restaurant and they serve typical Umbrian food (delicious) — a specialty is truffle pasta!

Today, the place is run by a local antiques dealer. The place is full of warmth and charm. The rooms are filled with antiques and each room has a bath or shower. There are gardens, vineyards, terraces and other nooks and crannies (and salons) to relax in…..You’re surrounded by great vistas, peace and quiet. There’s a bar, a nice breakfast in the drawing room and you can walk right in to the city. You’ll like the "feel" here. If you feel the urge to buy antiques — you can right here — in the shop!

A great place to stay! It’s a 15th century farmhouse with a super restaurant (Ristorante I Vecchi Tempe), lovely rooms (really lovely) and gracious hosts. The farmhouse has been restored to perfection. There are 10 rooms that are decorated with great care. Each room has bath or shower, TV, air conditioning, phone, a panoramic view and a safe. The place exudes the colors and ambiance of Umbria (think earthtones, stucco, tile, stone and brick along with comfort and oodles of quality). The restaurant serves great food including some specialties like cappelacci di ricotta con arance e fiocchi di pomodoro or fettuccine alle pere e pecorino or gnocchi ai porcini e pomodori perini — or grilled meat! At night you sit in the stillness and enjoy the incomparable views. An absolute delight!
