Arco (Lake Garda)

Elegant Arco is located near Lake Garda (at the northern end of the Lake). The town is characterized by gardens (fabulous climate), historical architecture and spa/health resort facilities (think royalty as well as naturalists)…..The town center is located at the foot of a craggy cliff — on top of the cliff are the remains of the 13th century Arco Castello. The old center is surrounded by medieval walls — you’ll enjoy the twisting streets, the charming squares, grand palazzi (dating to the 16th century) and water-filled fountains (particularly the Baroque Fontana Di Moses in the main square). On the main square, Piazza III Novembre you’ll find the 17th century (Renaissance) Collegiata Dell’Assunta which contains a fabulous collection of art, architecture and treasures. Also on this square are the town hall (obsessively Baroque) and several palazzi: Palazzo Marchetti (16th century), the arcaded/porticoed Palazzo Giuliani/Palazzo Della Loggia and the Palazzo Marcabruni (among others in town). Of course, the Castello Di Arco is a source of great history and archaeology — items found here prove that the castle (in some form) existed prior to the year 1000! The castle was rebuilt in the 12th century by the Arco family who were basically feudal lords. This is a great place to discover and tour (it’s also a climb). Note the frescoes that still exist after time and war. There are several churches that you should visit: the Chiesa Di St. Apollinare is an ancient church in the Romanesque style; the Chiesa Di St. Paolo is a 12th century church is a lovely setting (olive groves); the Chiesa di St. Giuseppe (17th century) has a beautiful altarpiece; if you have time, check out the Madonna Delle Grazie Santuario, a Franciscan convent in Ceole dating to the 15th century. It was here in 1508 that Maximilian of Austria and Louis XII King of France and Venice signed a 3-year truce. Finally, do take time to visit the Archducal Arboretum (Archduke Albrechtof Hapsburg fame). This park was built around his villa in the 19th century. You’ll find numerous species of trees from all over the world.
