Sicilia: Erice

Erice is located
above the sea (almost vertically on Mount San Giuliano) overlooking
the Trapani harbor. Just driving up is a treat/experience. Erice
is a cool little medieval town with twisting streets and ramparts/walls
(8th century). Somewhere in the history of Erice
is a cult dedicated to Venus Erycina (goddess of fertility).
Today the Castello di Venere is on the site of Venus
tempio/temple. The Castello di Venere was built in the 12th
century and is today in ruins (its beautiful up here).
The views from here and from the gardens of the Villa
Balio are exceptional (lots of towers). The Chiesa Matrice
is a 14th century church with a campanile/bell tower
totally separate from the chiesa. Theres a fine statue
of the Madonna by Laurana inside. The Museo Comunale Cordici
has artifacts, paintings, folk art and Gaginis Annunciation.
Do try the cous cous here
Monday is Market day
in Erice. .
