Enna is a lovely hill town (the highest in Sicily) right in the center of Sicily. Via Roma is the main street in town. At the top of the town you’ll be rewarded with the Castello di Lombardia, a 13th century castle for Frederick II (where didn’t he have a castle?). At one time there were 20 towers to this fortress (you’ll see the six remaining). You’ll be speechless by the views from here (take photos). The Baroque duomo (14th century) has a pretty façade and supposedly was built over Persephone’s Temple. Just behind the duomo are the Museo Alessi (with items from the Cathedral Treasury) and the Museo Archeologico/Museo Varisano (with artifacts from the region). The Chiesa di San Francesco has a 15th century Gothic campanile/bell tower. The public gardens have a great tower (the town had many) called Torre di Federico. Supposedly there was a secret passage from the castello to this tower…..Market day is Tuesday in Enna.
