Sardegna: Nuoro

Nuoro
is a town with a lot of tradition (some of the women still
wear traditional dress). It is an ancient town and at one time
was called the "Athens of Sardinia". It was a
center for art and culture. Nuoro lies at the foot of Monte
Ortobene, rather isolated from the rest of the world (unfortunately
more people are discovering the town
.). The Cattedrale
di Santa Maria della Neve (19th century)
is a neoclassic cathedral with twin towers and a lovely peachy
color. The Piazza Sebastiano Satta has some big (rather
unusual) granite blocks (in honor of Sebastiano Satta a
local poet). The Museo delle Vita e delle Tradizioni Popolari
Sarde/Museo Etnografico (all about traditions and local life)
has Sardinian costumes, furnishings, literature, jewelry and other
folkloric items. The Civic Museo Speleo-Archeologico
has archaeological finds from the area. The Museo Deleddiano
is Grazia Deleddas birthplace (a nobel prize
winning writer) and is set up as described in her novel Cosima.
Friday and Saturday are market days in Nuoro.
