Sardegna: Alghero

Alghero,
once owned by a Catalan family is the most Spanish city in Sardegna/Sardinia
(at one time it was called Barceloneta/little Barcelona).
Even the street signs are in Catalan
.The town is located
on the Riviera del Corallo/Coral Riviera and is
situated among vineyards and olive groves. The ancient center
is behind fortified walls and is easily navigable. From these
walls you can look out over the harbor. The duomo/Cattedrale
di Santa Maria (14th century) has a carved doorway
and an octagonal bell tower/campanile. The Torre dellEspero
Real/Tower of the Royal Spur (16th century) can
be toured and has a maze-like interior. The Palazzo dAlbis/Palazzo
Ferrara (16th century) is a Catalan inspired
building. The Chiesa di San Francesco (14th
century) is a Catalan treasure. Do visit the beautiful cloisters
here. Alghero has wonderful beaches (very little pollution),
secluded bays, inlets all very refreshing and pristine.
Take a stroll on the Lungomare (seafront) everyone
else does! And do visit Neptunes Cave (you can
walk in or take a boat) its a cool sight. This
area is called the lobster coast make sure you have some
lobster probably the best youll ever have! Market
day is Wednesday in Alghero.
