Garessio
is a small town a health resort and ski town located
in the high Tanaro Valley. Its a pleasant place as it
is located in the mountains and is not far from the sea (it
borders the Ligurian region). The thermal spring here
(apparently) has miraculous powers and thats what brings
some tourists to this pretty little town
..the cure. Its
also a ski town with forested mountain trails (Mount Mindino
and Mount Antoroto) and about 10 km for those interested in
cross country skiing which is also popular here. In town, see
the Chiesa di Santa Catherine and the Chiesa di Assunta
with its ancient bell tower/campanile. The town itself is a
charmer as the houses dot the countryside (filled with forests
and chestnut trees). Do take in the Castello di Casotto
which is 10 miles from Garessio. It was the summer palazzo of
the royal House of Savoy the drive there is magnificent
and the setting (above Garessio) is exceptionally beautiful.
Stop over in Ormea too and see the ruins of the 11th
century castle there. Friday is market day in Garessio.
