Sirolo
is a charming medieval town on the Adriatic Riviera (or
shall I say above?). I find it posh, pristine and panoramic
(all at the same time) - I'm sure you'll like it here.
The beaches are breathtakingly beautiful, as there are
cliffs and caves and sheer drops to the sea along this
portion of the coast (the beaches are fine pebbles). The
coastline is hugged by the Monte Conero which provides
steep cliffs, private coves and secluded beaches. You'll
find restaurants along the coast, as well as in the medieval
center, which perches precariously high above the sea.
Some of the best views you'll find are in the main square
which acts as a veranda overlooking the sea (unbelievable).
In town you'll find a medieval fortified center (11th
century) that has been very well preserved (ramparts),
a castle, piazzas and gardens. Several churches are worth
noting here: The Chiesa della Madonna Rosario has
some lovely 16th century frescoes; The Chiesa del Santissimo
Sacramento has a 4th century portal; do check out
the Chiesa di San Pietro and the Chiesa Parocchiale
di San Nicolo (18th century) for simple beauty. The
Parco Natural del Conero is a well-protected oasis
along this coast and offers hikes, beaches, birds and
plants.
