Fermo
sits on a hill overlooking the sea and countryside.
Its an interesting town
with quite a few treasures. Right at
the center is the arcaded Piazza del Popolo
(also known as San Martino Square after the church
there). In the piazza are several palazzi including the
Palazzo Priori (16th century), which is
a gallery/museum/library (Palazzo degli Studi)
and the town hall (Palazzo Comunale). There
are other fine palazzos and churches in town as well.
On the Rocca is the duomo (13th century)
with the regal façade of white stone and the tomb
of Giovanni Visconti (on the portico). Inside there are
some mosaics and other beautiful treasures. The Piazza
del Duomo offers great panoramic views of the entire
area.
Porto
San Giorgio is a charming and lively town with much
to offer the traveler. First, you have real beaches
here
.you can base out of this town easily if sunbathing
is your main diversion. The town has a 13th
century fortress/castle near the center of town
and it is quite a sight. The fortress was built by Lorenzo
Tiepolo.
