Liguria:
Sarzana

To appreciate Sarzana
you have to pass through the urban growth to get to the
lovely historic center of town. Unlike other towns Ive
listed in Liguria, Sarzana is located inland (not far
inland) on the Magra River. Enter the gates (try
Porta Romana) and youll find yourself in the center
of town. Here youll find charming squares, narrow
streets, shops, cafes and quite a few churches and monuments
worth seeing
The oldest church in Sarzana is
Chiesa Di SantAndrea (10th century).
The Cattedrale DellAssunta (13th
century) is a mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.
Inside youll find a lovely rose window, some fine
paintings, a carved marble altarpiece (Riccomani) and
a Crucifixion by Guglielmo (12th century).
Along Piazza Mazzini youll find lovely Palazzi.
Do see the Palazzo Communale/town hall (15th
century) on Piazza Luni. The Chiesa Di San Francesco
has some fine sculptures. The castle that stands dominantly
over Sarzana is called Cittadella (Firmafede Fortress).
It was built by Lorenzo De Medici. The other castle
just northeast of town is the Fortezza Di Sarzanello
(14th century) has moats, towers and views.
