Liguria: Rapallo

Rapallo is a lovely resort on the sea. It’s less chic (and is larger) than Portofino, but I’ve found it charming at any time of year. You can easily get to the towns along the coast and the city it very manageable. There’s a wonderful walk (or promenade) along the sea and the medieval center is interesting to wander about (LungomareVittorioVeneto). In the old town is the local church and the leaning tower. The tower of the Commune Rapallese is the symbol of the town. There are ruins of a Cistercian monastery called Valle Christi (founded in 1204) here too. The Monte di Portofino Nature Park offers hikes in to the hills and to other towns (the views are great). You walk among olive groves, vineyards, flowers and trees. The churches in the area also worth a look: Santi Gervasio e Protasio, Chiesa Santo Stefano and the Oratory dei Neri (with a 15th century tower). There’s a lace museum in the Villa Tigullio (17th century). Lace making has long been a tradition in this town. Boat trips can be arranged year round. Market day in Rapallo is on Thursday.
