Lazio: Viterbo

Viterbo is a lovely medieval town with fountains, stone walls, alleys, arches and pretty buildings. The main square is the Piazza dei Plebiscito, home of the town hall (Palazzo dei Priori — 1247). There’s a sweet fountain in the courtyard. Another fountain, the Fontana a fuso is on the Piazza della Morte. Piazza San Lorenzo (formerly an Etruscan acropolis) has the Cathedral di San Lorenzo which dates back to the 10th century and has a Gothic campanile. The Palazzo dei Papi/Il Palazzo Papale (Papal Palace) is just to the right of San Lorenzo. The palazzo was started (built) in the mid 13th century and today is the residence of the bishop of Viterbo. You’ll find Etruscan and Roman finds as well as paintings in the Museo Civico. This museum is located in a former monastery called Santa Maria della Verita (12th century). The town is also a spa town (sulphurous water). Market day is Saturday in Viterbo.
