Lazio: Sperlonga

Sperlonga is a pretty whitewashed fishing village in the Aurunci Mountains. There are nice beaches, caves, piazzettas and the village is still partially surrounded by walls. The Grotta di Tiberio is a cave where Emperor Tiberius used to swim. The ruins of his villa are at the front of the grotta (pretty good ruins too). There is a 7th century church in town called Sancta Mariae de Spelonche, it is the oldest in Sperlonga and is closed to the public (being refurbished). The Capella del Presepe is a 17th century chapel with beautiful frescoes. Another church to see is the Madonna dell’Assunta. There are 2 towers on the shore that are worth seeing: Torre Truglia and Torre Capovento — both from 16th century. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Sperlonga has some fine Greek sculpture and other artifacts from the area. I always hope no one is going to find this charming little port — I hope that it stays nice and untouristy…..one can hope………Market day is Saturday in Sperlonga.
