Lazio: Palestrina

Palestrina is one of the oldest towns in Italy (7th century). The town has much charm and should be visited if only to see the ruins of the Santuario della Fortuna Primigiena (along with the views). This temple, built by ancient Romans on four terraces that flow down the hill was the seat of an oracle. On the terraces are the remains of Antro delle Sorti/Cave of Destiny and the Aula dell’Oracolo (the home of the oracle). Where the temple once was (at the top of the hill) is the Palazzo Colonna Barberini which is today the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Prenestino. Here you will find a very good collection of Roman artifacts. Make sure you see the Barberini mosaic at the museum. Market day is Saturday in Palestrina.
