Ravello,
a medieval town is set above Amalfi on a virtual shelf! The city
is known as the Citta di Musica because of the classical
music concerts held here (even off peak, concerts are held and
are well publicized in all of the towns along the coast
I was in Amalfi and saw the poster in my hotel and attended a
concert that very night). The best views out over the Amalfi Coastline
are from here in Ravello. The streets are like staircases. The
villas in town offer the best points from which to memorize the
intoxicating views
..The Piazza Vescovado is the central
or main square in town. The 11th century Duomo can
be reached after climbing the short staircase on this Piazza.
Its worth the climb to see the bronze doors, the marble
pulpit with a base of lions and the museum in the crypt that has
religious artifacts, mosaics and sculptures. The Villa
Rufolo overlooks the Piazza and was built in the 13th
century. The gardens and ruins of this villa are very beautiful
(especially with the backdrop of the sea and flowers). TheVilla
Cimbrone is set away from the main piazza, (just past the
Chiesa di San Francesco - check out the cloister here). Head to
the gardens and the Belvedere Cimbrone for the most stunning
views! Do this, its a great way to see where you are and
to enjoy nature in all its glory. I repeat, this is a must
see the Cimbrone gardens are extensive, filled with beautiful
flowers and statues, nooks, paths and absolute beauty. Ravello
is also known for the concerts it holds throughout the year. Hopefully
a string quartet or some other wonderful musician will be performing
while youre here. FYI: you might spot Gore Vidal in or around
town, he has a home here
smart man
as a matter of fact,
I spent Thanksgiving here one year and I saw him a couple of times
that day once in the main square with friends and then
sitting right on the veranda of my hotel having a coffee with
another friend! Market day in Ravello is Tuesday.
