In the 6th century, Paestum was known as Poseidonia. The city dates back to 600 BC. There are 3 Greek temples, the Basilica, the Tempio di Nettuno (Temple of Neptune) and Tempio di Cerere (Temple of Ceres). The Temple of Neptune is considered to be one of the most beautiful and best preserved Greek temples in the world (this one is in Italy and the other two are in Greece). The actual site of the 3 temples is beautiful, they stand alone among wildflowers, green grass and blue skies…they’re beautiful. Do visit the Museo di Paestum nearby, to see the metopes (decorations/carvings from the friezes from the Tempio di Argive Hera —located just north of Paestum). Market day in Paestum is Thursday.
