Calabria: Castrovillari

Castrovillari sits at the foot of Monte Pollino. The ancient — beyond ancient (Neolithic) roots of this town are evident throughout the area. The town is surrounded by its Roman walls (not completely however) and it is quite striking as you see the Aragonese Castle (15th century) and the various buildings that date back to that time — very lovely — very evocative. At the top of town (on a dominating hill) is the Santuario di Santa Maria del Castello, an 11th century church with frescoes and paintings. Check out the Chiesa di San Giuliano (11th century) with a 16th century portal and Museo Sacra. The Museo Civico has a vast (and fine) collection of artifacts from prehistoric times to medieval times.
