Basilicata: Lagonegro
Lagonegro
is known for being the burial place of Mona Lisa. Her tomb
is in the 10th century Chiesa di San Nicola.
Many have argued that Mona Lisa was from Florence
but the folks
in Lagonegro insist that even in the portrait by da Vinci, the scenery
is definitely typical of Lagonegro and the surrounding area. Lagonegro
sits at the foot of Mount Sirino in an area of woods, mountains
and lakes. The pristine beauty of the area is worth the trip alone.
The town is Baroque in style and has some churches worth exploring.
I like this town because you can easily get to many sights including:
Caves of Angels (Pertosa) with the unbelievable stalactites
and stalagmites dating back over 35 million years! You can also
"walk" to Monte del Papa (a climb a real
climb not for the faint of heart) to see views of the entire
area including the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. Also worth a look
is the Certosa di Padula, a Carthusian monastery dating back
to 1305. Sunbathing or skiing are ideal diversions here!
