Sulmona

Abruzzo: Sulmona

The birthplace of Ovid (the poet), Sulmona is a medieval town with a palace (Palazzo dell’Annunziata) built in 1320 that combines several styles of architecture. Today the Museo Civico is located in the palace. Do note the entrance which is Gothic and just to the side the arched openings with statues which are Renaissance in style. The church is located right next door and was built in the 15th century and rebuilt (in the 1700s) after an earthquake. Piazza Garibaldi is a main square and has an aqueduct on two sides (medieval, built in 1256) and the Fontana del Vecchio (Renaissance) located just across from the doorway (Romanesque) of what remains of the Chiesa di San Francesco della Scarpa. Market day is Wednesday and Saturday in Sulmona.
